I just got my Vertical Jacket and its amazing. The collar is very soft and the hood keeps you warm and dry. I like all the pockets they are very convenient. It looks and feels great, will be buying more Marmot products in the future

My work associate just purchased this jacket. I wear a North Face Apex, and this Marmot makes it look like a cheap Columbia. We even get quicker service on our business lunches because of the jacket. I will be upgrading to this model once I receive my next pay check.

Just bought and used a Marmot Vertical up at Breckenfridge on Sunday. It was very, very cold (mask weather, very windy); and seemed to work fairly well. Not totally windproof for sure. Froze to death on the lift. I wore light long johns and a shirt over that so, more insulation should solve that problem.
Sizing is great XL/T, my wrists don't get exposed to snow or wind due to long arms. All the features were really user friendly and in all the right places. Big plus on the adjustable hood.
A+ for anyone who has sweating or overheating issues like me, but doesn't want the wet, sweat soaked shell thing.
The bland primary colors are atrocious IMHO. The black is the only one I could wear. Other than that, pretty happy.

Just got this jacket and it is awsome. I am 6ft 170 lb and I got the large so I can wear my marmot Zeus under it when chilling at camp or a sweater when im skiing. I dont like my shell to be too tight and I found that it could be that way if I am layering my clothes. If im not layering and just wearing this around town I could get away with a medium, but on the trail or mountain I totally go with a large. I just added the scree pants to go with this jacket as well and they are my favorite pants now. I love the set up and I must say-- "Marmot for life"
I also think the pit zips are genius, they are kinda the built in thermostat for the jacket. The hood is large enough for my helmet and I like the way the visor on the hood flips up to act like a bill.
I bought the granite and charcoal color but took it back because it is just too light colored and my pack harness might discolor the lighter color, I ended up with the Red and am very happy. Marmot makes good products, I would recommend this jacket to anyone.

Just bought this jacket and I am in love with it. Its very warm, has all the features you need for a ski trip. The only thing before you buy online is to try it out at least in a store or buy at the store. I own about 7-10 different jackets varying from Northface, Arcteryx, Mountain Hardwear and a couple others. I normally wear a Large in all those jackets and according the sizing charts I should be a Large being 5'11 178-180ish. I'm an athletic guy, but when I tried on the Large the sleeves were a bit long, and the jacket just seemed way too big like I was wearing an XL. I ended up buying a Medium and it fit like all my other Large jackets. Just check it out at the store before you buy it!

AWESOME!
I work at an outdoor ed center and this is my go-to jacket. Loaded with features, great material, plenty of room for layers (5'9'' 120lbs) in the small. I have a + 4'' wingspan and the sleeves still make it to my wrists!
Only one question:
What are the snaps on the botton inside of hte jacket for? I presume to keep the skirt from flapping around, but they leave a cold metal in the pocket, and the skirt gets kinda twisted around on the left. I'm not a skier so this feature may be beyond me.
Marmot products rock, i love this jacket.

Bought this as a cold weather jacket for myself after reading a lot of reviews. I've been sold on Marmot for a while and decided to go with this jacket over the gravity jacket due to the inclusion of a removable hood and just to try something new. I must say I am enamored with this jacket and it is what I wear no matter where I'm going and what I'm doing. It's angel wing arm cut allows for fantastic movement and the jacket is thick enough to keep me warm in some of the coldest weather with just a T-shirt underneath. Even though I consider it an athletic cut I can pretty easily layer clothing underneath, although I can see why some others may want to size up if you layer on a regular basis. Pockets are plentiful, zippers are strong and water tight, and the snow skirt is a nice touch. This jacket's sharp looks and smart features make it the perfect jacket for me and I believe you will not be dissapointed with this jacket if you try it.

Just picked up this jacket on sale. Tried it on a few weeks ago didnt buy it right away. After a couple of weeks I and had to go back. Great all around jacket. Very comfortable. Feels really well made and solid. I usually wear a lot of North Face and this puts their quality to shame.
Thanks to whoever designed this jacket. Really good work.

This jacket is not waterproof. It is water resistant. In other words, you might get wet if you wore it in a pounding rain storm. You will not get wet in a snow storm or by falling in snow. I wore mine at Disneyland a couple of weeks ago when the weather was rainy for SoCal. Short downpours and constant drizzle - did not wet anywhere. I had GoreTex pants on and the jacket did just as good in this situation. I love mine, except the hood is really tight over a ski helmet.

Is this jacket waterproof or not? If I am skiing in a snow storm, or better yet fall, will I get wet? Should I be focused on Membrain or GoreTex to stay dry?
on 2/24/11.
Thank you for your question. The Vertical Jacket is an M1 softshell and is not waterproof. It is water resistant.

Thanks for clearing that up!!

I absolutely love this jacket. It feels great and looks great. It sheds the rain well enough and keeps the wind out. The hood is warn and fits nicely.
I really can't say enough nice things about this jacket.

I live in an area where nearly everyone wear's TNF, so I wanted something different. I got this jacket, and I absolutely love it. The one commenter is right - this jacket is equally great on the slopes or just wearing around town. It is perfect for 40 to 60 degrees. Below 40 degrees, I find that you do need to layer up (a t-shirt and lightweight fleece will usually do the trick, or for really cold weather an under armour or comparable base layer plus a midweight fleece). Will definitely be buying Marmot again.

I've heard conflicting reports about the relative warmness of this jacket and am wondering what I'll need to layer under it for sitting on a ski lift in 10* weather in the northeast. The large fits me well with a thin fleece layer underneath; for anything thicker underneath I'll need to move up to an XL. Would prefer the closer fitting L but don't want to be cold on the mountain. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

A question regarding fit:
I am 5'7" and 220lbs with a 45"chest and bird legs!(meaning all the weight is in the top half) According to your size chart I should opt for a Large but am worried the chest will be snug. Will that leave enough room for a couple layers if need be? Or should I go with the XL to be safe?
on 2/6/12.
No issues at all. Fit is a bit roomy but perfect for layering and allowing movement. Sleeve movement is great. Men's M fit my 5'8" 155lb athletic ape-armed build (17"x33" men's dress shirt). Wind protection is great. At 30 degrees I had a wool base layer, a light wicking mock turtleneck, and the shell - just the amount of layering I was hoping for at that temp. At 23 degrees I added a thicker wicking shirt (like a 200-wt). Never needed the puffy in the pack.
Small nits - the pit zips could be 2" longer down the torso, and the snaps on the powder cuff could be revised to allow the left side to be snapped to the shell better. There is a snap nub on each side of the shell for the cuff to snap to when not in use. On the wearer's left side the cuff must be folded back so the snap will mate. If the back of cuff snap were a male snap and the one on the body were a female snap then the cuff could be secured nice and flat.

I'm about to buy this jacket but I seem to be between a medium and large...I'm 5 ft 9, 175 lbs, I assume i'll be wearing a micro-fleece layer. The Nice Marmot - what do you recommend?
on 3/21/12.
People have different body shapes, however, so if your experience is that Large is sometimes snug, especially with layers, the best thing is to visit a local store and try one on -- with the layers you plan on wearing. Check out our Local Retailer Locator.

You are on the cusp, and could wear either a Medium or Large. Go larger if you want to layer underneath. If you're unsure about the fit, you can visit a local store and try one on. Try our Local Retail Locator.

I bought this jacket because I love my Marmot Sharp Point and Genisis softshells and wanted something else with a hood and a little more warmth. I found the fit to be tighter overall compared to the same size in the SP and G jackets. I know the fabrics are different and the Vertical is a stretch-type, but it feels like I need an XXL instead of my usual XL. ( I am 6'3" and 205 lbs.) I also do not like the hood on the Vertical. It is old-school and does not fit a helmet very well, at least as compared to the Genesis jacket. I give the Sharp Point and Genesis jackets five stars and the Vertical gets only four.

Bought a vertical Jacket 2 winter seasons ago, and it worked well in sunny cold winter days.
I've found it not completly waterproof under moderate snow, and it had lost color due to lot sweat getting my backpack blotted.
Vertical remains a great gear despite these defects; I'd buy it again.
on 9/24/11.
Great jacket. Can handle 60 degree weather and 10 degree weather comfortably. Literally windproof. No problem with sizing (I am 6'3", 185 lbs and have a Large).
on 11/14/11.
I bought this jacket last year and really liked it. The other day I had a chance to wear it in wet weather, light rain on a three hour hike. I happily remained very dry, except for an unhappily wet and cold right upper arm. On inspection, the water was leaking in through the "Marmot" thread stitched into the arm. This seems to be a really stupid idea by compromising the water resistant/waterproof fabric. Is this a defect where the thread should have been treated for waterproofness? Should I return it?
on 6/22/12.
There are Marmot Jackets that are 100% Seam taped to prevent situations like you have described, but the Vertical jacket is not one of them.
