MemBrain® Strata™
Marmot’s own lightweight waterproof / breathable technology. A lamination technology that rates a whopping 20,000mm in waterproof performance and 20,000 gr in breathability.
Requiring neither lining nor 3-layer construction like many similar lamination processes, MemBrain® Strata™ products are by far the lightest, most breathable garments in their categories.
Marmot’s proprietary 2.5 layer MemBrain® Strata uses micro non-organic particles on the inside of the lamination to increase durability and provide a dry touch instead of that clammy feeling you get from some other products.
The back print pattern is carefully designed to achieve the maximum durability and breathability. Abrasion tests rate 4-5 times better than regular MemBrain® (which is why regular MemBrain, as well as all 2-layer laminates require a separate lining).
Compared to 2.5 layer coatings in the market, our 2.5 layer lamination is about 100% more breathable. In addition, laminated stretch fabrics stretch more and have a softer hand than 2.5 layer coated fabrics.

So Many Features
Inspired by the 6 oz. Mica jacket – the 2009 shell that uses Marmot’s 2.5 layer MemBrain Strata fabric technology – the Super Mica takes the light waterproof/breathable laminate shell technology and gives it new muscle with new features. The jacket is micro-stitched and 100% seam taped. It features a gale-force hood with laminated wire brim; an ERG hood adjustment system; a water-resistant CF zipper; PitZips with water resistant zippers; pack pockets with water-resistant zippers; Duralite zonal reinforcements; asymmetric cuffs with Velcro adjustment; integrated cooling vents; reflective logos; an elastic draw cord hem; and angel-wing movement.
Outside Buyer’s Guide 2010 Super Mica
Weather Beaters
You might not recognize all the new jacket ingredients these days, but the main courses remain the same. There are still waterproof-breathable hard shells for full-on deluges, breathable and stretchy soft shells for just about every other kind of weather, and the growing category of lightly insulated jackets for when you need a bit of warmth. Here are a few pointers to help narrow the field. With hard shells, you’ll want pit zips if you’re heading anyplace hot or humid. Soft shells: Generally speaking, the more wind-and water-proof it is, the less breathable it is. Insulated jackets: Look for a lightly-stuffed, trim-fitting option if you think you’ll layer over it. Now, those proprietary fabrics and material: We discuss quite a few of them in the following pages, but not all. If the salesperson – whether in an online chat bubble or in person – can’t confidently and clearly explain the stuff, we recommend you take your business elsewhere. Or go to facebook.com/outside-magazine, ask us a question (about jackets or any other piece of gear, for that matter), and we’ll be happy to set you straight.
AND THE WINNER IS…
Marmot Super Mica. We knew we had an exceptional waterproof-breathable jacket on our hands when, after field-testing the Super Mica for five months, one of our most jaded reviewers reported, “It’s the best backcountry shell I’ve ever worn.” The reason is pretty simple. Normally, ultralight jackets like the Super Mica save weight by forgoing user-friendly features. But Marmot has somehow managed to cram in just about everything you need in a storm shell – from a wire-stiffened brim to gaping pit zips to two big chest pockets – without hitting nine ounces. The fabric is key here. Marmot’s 30-denier house-brand stuff is remarkably tough for how thin it is (it packs down to the size of a PB&J) and affords stout protection from the elements. Plus, at high-wear areas at the shoulders and hips, the jacket is reinforced with thin strips of laser-cut seam tape. Add it all up, as one tester summarized, and you’ve got “everything you want in a jacket.” - Sam Moulton
Climbing Gear Guide 2010 Super Mica Jacket
Highly Utilitarian
Waterproof, breathable, and equipped with pit zips and a wire-brimmed hood, the Super Mica is a highly utilitarian shell that also happens to be ultralight – only 8 oz. This thing is reinforced for toughness and sports water-resistant zippers and reflective logos. Wad it up, stash it in your pack, and hit the crags – it’s bound to come in handy.

The Super Mica Jacket sounds really good and all, except for one thing. The zipper is on the opposite side of all other traditional men's jackets. Why are the zippers on the opposite side? I have read comments of the previous Mica Jacket and this seems to be one thing that sticks out. I would love to get one of these things except this one minor detail is enough to keep me from buying one. If there are plans on making it on the normal side (for men), I would get one immediately.

Hi,
Is there a women's Super Mica Jacket available (or any plans to make one)?
Thanks.
on 5/31/10.
Why is the zipper on the wrong side? There's no reason why it couldn't be made with the zipper on the same side as all other clothing for men.

Hi Michael, you are not the first to comment on this particular detail! When creating this jacket, our designers were looking for the lightest weight parts to go along with the design. This super lightweight zipper is only made one way, we had no choice...so we sacrificed a little form for function.
Thanks!

I also read this about every Lowe Alpine jacket. I have one and it has never ever bothered or even occurred to me. I find it weird how so many people have a problem with the side of the zipper. Anyone care to explain how it can be such a big deal?
on 6/14/10.
I agree, that would be awesome if there was a women's version.

That is a very, very good question!!

I love Marmot. But I have a problem. I love my old Marmot jackets more than the new ones.
I have a great old Marmot 3-layer Gore parka, called, I think the Superlight. It's roomy, so it will fit over any insulating layers I can think of, including down. It's long, so it will cover my hips and lower torso in the worst of conditions. I can adjust for layers, fit, pack belts, etc., through the various cinches and Velcro.
So how does a super-light parka called the Super Mica win "super" honors? From the model photo, it won't fit more than a thin baselayer underneath. From the model photo, this is a WAIST-LENGTH jacket. How do you call anything waist-length a rain jacket? Jeez, fully 1/3 of your torso is going to get wet! (And why is the model wearing blue jeans? That will make wet things only worse, particularly if it's cold. Remember, "cotton kills!")
I don't know why many technical clothing manufacturers are skimping on the one factor that makes a difference: Coverage. THAT is a horrible way to save money.
Oh, by the way, my workaround for modern sizing is to size up to XXL. That's a shame, because I'm not the biggest baby boomer on the block.
Hey, Marmot, how about a fit reset on "slim-fit" (read, save material costs) lines? How about restoring that important factor called "Coverage?"
Thanks, a loyal customer of 25+ years.

Dear Marmot lover, we do appreciate your support. The Super Mica is very lightweight...slim fit also translates to weight savings which is important to some (but not all). We have a range of jackets for all of our dedicated fans, from full coverage, multi-sport to more specific uses.
Check out our Aegis Jacket, it uses the same waterproof/breathable technology and has a a longer cut.
Thanks!
on 7/30/10.
I was interested in the Super Mica until I read the comment about the length being so short. Your recommendation of the Aegis Jacket as having a longer cut doesn't seem to jive with your site's listed specs. The Super Mica is 29" center back length for a medium and the Aegis is shown as 28 3/4" for a medium. Still looking for a longer ~33" jacket.

You're definitely looking at the wrong jacket for your specific interests and purpose, it's like complaining that a Ferrari can't fit your extended family. This jacket is for minimalists, it's a huge trend nowadays. So most people will only be storing this in their ultralight (read: see-through) backpack and they'll pull it out if it starts raining.

this jacket is a masterpeice it is amazing it has all the goods you will ever need.

This jacket is a work of art, it is simply perfect from the pitzips to the lightness and breathability to the complete and total water stopping power.

When will the lithium be available in medium in the UK?

Would love to get my paws on an XL in lithium - any ideas when you will have some in stock?? They are sold out worldwide by the looks of it1

I am looking for a lightweight waterproof jacket that will withstand variable conditions for long periods in the hills carrying all my gear. Have a heavy hardshell for serious winter/alpine conditions, but Supa Mica looks/sounds like a good summer/autumn option. One question: will it deteriorate rapidly with the light fabric and construction and has anybody used this jacket for long consistent trips?

And another question (to Nice Marmot), would you consider producing a ROM version of this light jacket, which would make it a superb, very light waterproof and very flexible feel outer layer, ideal for long days out climbing fast, and reducing the need for a softshell mid-layer garment.

I bought the Mica jacket last year, training for my BGR & general fast(ish) & light stuff.
Was looking for something that would fill the gap between a light pertex jacket & a full blown cag.
It is a perfect jacket for fellrunning in pretty bad conditions.
Great fit & zips that work really well.
If I could change one thing, I'd have a loop on the inside, at the back of the neck, to stash/roll away the hood, when not in use, that aside, it is awesome!
Really, really good breathability & fantastic protection, at an incredible weight.
Good work Marmot!

Met a through hiker on the AT that had one. Everything about it sounded fantastic especially the weight. Every few ounces translates into a better hike for my knees and me. I can't wait to get one!

The zipper thing is a non-issue. It´s all high quality, thats all thats matter.
