M2

Marmot M-series fabrics are designed for moving light and fast. They combine stretchable, water repellent, abrasion resistant and highly breathable shell materials with insulating buffer materials on the inside.

M2 shells are the ideal balance between weather resistance, breathability and thermal protection. They are appropriate for a wide range of aerobic use in moderate to cold conditions.

WINDSTOPPER®

WINDSTOPPER® Soft Shells offer total windproofness and maximum breathability, combining the comfort of a soft mid-layer and the water resistance of a shell in one garment. WINDSTOPPER® Soft Shells keep you comfortable and provide the freedom of movement you need for enhanced performance in a wide range of activities and weather conditions.

Constructed of soft, quiet, stretchy fabrics, WINDSTOPPER® protects your body’s warmth from the chilling effects of wind and weather and prevents overheating and perspiration build-up by allowing moisture vapor to easily escape. The unique WINDSTOPPER® membrane totally stops wind from penetrating the fabric while allowing moisture to escape unhindered for 2X more breathability than comparable windproof products.

With this 3-layer construction, the WINDSTOPPER® membrane is bonded between a high performance fabric such as robust, high-quality stretch polyester on one side, and a quick-drying polyester fleece on the other. The durable water repellent finish offers additional weather protection.

Designed for an active fit, WINDSTOPPER® performs well in outdoor activities, such as hiking, backpacking, cycling, hunting, mountain sports, skiing, snowboarding and trekking in weather conditions, including: strong winds, light snow and rain.

TRANSCRIPT:

Hi my name is Brenton Reagon, I’m a Marmot Athlete. I’m going to take you on a tour in the Teton back country in my ROM Jacket.

The Marmot ROM Jacket is a breathable soft shell. It falls into the M2 category which means it’s windproof yet highly breathable. It’s made from GORE® WINDSTOPPER® and it has breathable panels underneath your armpits so if you’re boot packing or skinning it allows you to let all the hot air out. So I don’t have to unzip too much. Also makes it lighter so I don’t have to deal with pit zips underneath my jacket. It also has a nice big storage pocket on the inside so if I need to keep my sunglasses or a Power Bar or anything else I need quickly, it’s right there and available. It also has Velcro cuffs, which keep it so that I can keep my gloves and my cuffs sealed so I can keep all the cold air out. Being a jacket that’s this light and this breathable and this windproof allows me to be faster in my transitions. The one thing I learned from skiing with Coombs was you always want to be fast in your transitions. It allows me to ski down in this jacket, throw my skis on my pack and take off before anybody else gets ahead of me.

So I’m about to hike up this ridge here behind me and the ROM Jacket is so breathable I won’t have to change jackets at all. It’ll allow me to boot pack right up to the top of the ridge without having to vent or anything. And once I get to the top of the ridge, the GORE® WINDSTOPPER® fabric will keep me from getting chilled, and I can just go ahead and just pull the hood up over my helmet and take off. I won’t miss a beat or I won’t have to slow down at all. Alright, let’s get out of here…

The wind’s really whipping up here today. They’re saying it’s below 0° wind chill, but I’m not feeling it.

Alright thanks for joining us here in the Teton back country. We’ve had some pretty good skiing today. We’re looking forward to a little bit more. So don’t forget – Marmot ROM Jacket. M2 soft shell; GORE® WINDSTOPPER®; it’s got a nice big hood to go over your helmet; inside chest pocket to keep stuff warm; breathable yet windproof.

Thank you very much.

Reviews and comments

Good jacket, especially with hood. From a materials perspective it appears to be identical to the Leadville Jacket, but now with a hood. Nothing wrong with creative marketing, guys.

As the video shows, this jacket is well suited for active pursuits, not static warmth.

Thanks for the vapor blue...very cool.

Do you deliever your products to the uk

Hi Antony, thanks for your comment. Yes we do sell in the UK. Click on the BUY NOW link above and there is a list of online dealers in the UK and Europe on the right towards the bottom of the page.

Hi,
I'm a cross country mountainbiker and am looking for a good jacket to wear during early spring and late fall when I'm out biking and it gets a bit chilly.
The ROM jacket seems nice, but I'm wondering if it'll be too warm for my intended use?
I've also been checking out the PreCip jacket, but I miss the wind resistant properties of the Rom jacket.

I too am a cross country MTB guy. I actually owned the woman's older version of this(I couldn't pass up the great deal on it). I love it. It broke down after about 8 years with the inner lining coming loose...and they warrantied IN FULL. I am getting ready order my new one now. I love the jacket for cool runs/rides with a light baselayer. It is very waterproof & incredibly comfy. The hoodie is lined across your face & closes up quite well. The pit zips rock, especially it you are really working up a sweat with a few long steady climbs. Gotta say, I love this jacket. Can't wait for my new one to arrive. Oh, and it packs pretty well too. I bit lofty when packing, but what a great piece of arsenal to have in the gear stash.

So you pay $25 over the Leadville for the hood. But then for the Super Hero you pay $135 over the Leadville for a hood which you can zip off but its otherwise identical?

Question: does this hood roll down conveniently and velcro away? thats not clear from the description.

Hey Sam, thanks for your careful consideration of the right Softshell. The Leadville and ROM are essentially the same jacket, one hooded and the other not. However, the Super Hero is more like the ROM on "steroids". There are two kinds of WINDSTOPPER® fabric, there is an inside pocket, laser drilled water resistant chest and hand pockets, plus the zip-off hood is coated for a little better water-repellency.

About the ROM hood, it does not roll away. The ERG hood adjustment refers to it's ability to be adjustable all the way around. You can get a near perfect fit with the face and side adjustment.

Um...actually I own the leadville and the ROM and their rather identical, but not entirely! I wear a medium usually I have a medium leadville and it is short, but the medium ROM was WAY to big! and I had to get a small, so nice try, but it's smaller fitting!!! I love it though.

I have to agree whole heartedly The SUPER HERO is an absolutely superb jacket. It is too bad that we have to wait till fall for it to return.

PEACE, DAVE..

Pete, try the Tempo or Paceline jackets, great for using on the bike. I have the Tempo and can't fault it, the Paceline would be the next level in lightweight wind resistence and waterproofness.

The leadville is my favorite jacket I own. Easily the most versatile and gets the most wear. I've always wished it had a hood, however and am really excited about the ROM.
Only thing is, many outlets aren't carrying it at this time, particularly REI (where I just happen to have a nice gift card). For those who might be considering this jacket, after a bit of research and an attempted special order through REI (which they said they couldn't do for the ROM), I found out that they will be carrying this jacket in the fall (supposedly in fall colors as well--great news for those who don't want to look like a popsicle with the current colors haha).
As for now, I'll keep truckin' with the leadville and eagerly wait for REI to get their stuff together

My local REI in Reading MA does carry the Rom Jacket (October 2010). I'm not sure when they got it but it is on sale for $124. I bought one today.

Personally I bought it for the hood. There are many other options out there w/o hoods. I am going to wear mine for skiing on the less frigid days.

I have the ROM and yes, it is helmet-compatible. I have a black diamond half-dome climbing helmet.

is the hood helmet compatible?

No way. I work at a gear shop that carries this product and the hood is almost balaclava styled.

How water resistant is this jacket? What exactly does "water resistant" mean anyway?

Richard, thank you for your question. When you are reviewing the ROM Jacket, click on our "technology" tab and read the Windstopper information. This gives you a great idea of activities this jacket is appropriate for in regards to water resistance.

My ROM-jacket totally is works. I have been climbing with it this summer in Swedish glaciers in chilly +/-0 weathers. My helmet fits inside the hood, cut fits me like a glove and the jacket is very highly water repellent. In summer storm I took my Exum-jacket and used ROM as a in-middle with merino baselayer. Totally kickd ass!

I have used it also in cold late summer hikes in far northern reach of Finland. ROM lets vapour and moisture out and keeps me warm but dry even when hiking with backpack in 0-condition.

Biggest minus of the jacket is the gray zipper, hate it... ( My ROM is red. )

Thanks Marmot.

As is noted in the description, two different fabrics are used on the jacket. The image of the black jacket makes it look like a solid color and it seems matted. In reality, the main color is black, but it's shiny (sort of how tech wic looks, not reflective, just not matte). The side color is more of a dark gray. None of this really matters for me since I've decided that I really like the jacket, but when I first opened the package it was a little disappointing.
The material is a bit thinner than I expected, but I haven't been cold yet in it.
Not exactly what I wanted, but probably exactly what I needed.

I have to say this is one of the best fitting softshell's i've ever had. I'll have to tell you one thing that totally swayed me towards this one: the cost I FOUND IT!! brand new my size in my favorite color....oh snap!! Im a active guy and this is perfect thanks satan you're the man.

I own an uptrack jacket in medium and a la grave jacket in medium, both are a great fit, but I border between a small and medium for a perfect fit. How does the size compare to the jackets?

Compared to the Uptrack, the ROM runs bigger. I tried on a medium in both, ROM fit me perfect but I would need a large in the Uptrack.

I recently purchased the ROM online after wearing a down parka snowboarding in 50 degree weather. I knew I needed a light shell for warmer days. With the ROM I couldn't be happier. The jacket is light and offers superior flexibility to move and bend as you please. We recently had a blizzard on the east coast and I wore this jacket with a light fleece underneath and wasn't cold in the least. The jacket offers great wind protection and feels to be made with quality. Only the test of time will really be the judge of that however. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and it beats out the Spyder Pastche jacket I was considering in it's place. Get the ROM, you won't be disappointed!

I've had my ROM jacket now for several months. It's been a very cold, snowy New England winter, and I've fallen in love with my ROM. I've been using it for shoveling snow (LOTS of shoveling), snowshoeing, and xc skiing. The side panels give great breathe-ability, but I don't feel the wind coming through. Water resistance is very good, the hood is very well designed, and there is ample pocket space. I'm 5'8" 170lbs, and the Medium fits well with room to layer underneath. IMHO, base layer choice is key with a soft-shell; when doing something very aerobic, I've been using a light base layer and am warm down to about 20 degrees. if doing something less aerobic, add more layers. I've had at least a half dozen Windstopper softshells, and this one is the best thus far.

I have owned several soft-shell jackets and this is my favorite jacket by far. I was originally worried about how breathable it is without side zips, but my fears were quickly dissolved. The stretchy/breathable side panels are amazing and even more breathable then pit zips as the encompass the entire side and underarms and sleeves.

The Gore-windstopper is increadibly waterproof and had no issue getting wet while running in the rain with this jacket. As most softshells get more water resistant and wind resistant they get less breathable, this jacket scores on a fine balance between the two. Occasionally, if one is doing very high output cardio, one will sweat more then the garment can breath.

Unfortunately there are no such products that I've found that can disperse enough sweat while putting out high output cardio, but this is the closest I've found to such a theoretical garment.

The hood is extremely well built, reminds me of an Arc'teryx type hood. There is also a nice pocket inside the jacket for storing a phone or ipod.

I bought this jacket late last year and so far this jacket has been great. We had a really bad New England winter last year and this jacket held up big time. This was my first Marmot purchase and I will definitely buy from them again. This jacket is breathable and lightweight. It's not bulky at all. I was surprised at how great this jacket fit me (I usually don't wear many jackets or outerwear because of the bulkiness) but this one had really good straight lines. This is a great choice for winter and early spring. In winter, just wear a medium to heavy sweatshirt underneath. In spring, just this and a t-shirt underneath.

Key points: super tight hood, convenient pockets, great fit, and really rain and wind resistant.

I bought this jacket because I tend to be a sissy in the cold. I do as much climbing as I can and the mountain is mostly opened during the colder months here in az. So far I have climbed everything from off widths and finger cracks and in pretty cold and very windy days. The hood fits perfectly over my tracer helmet, and really cannot complain at all, although something wore a little on the chest pocket when I had something in it. But otherwise I love this jacket, its shown durability so far and would keep buying them when I wear one out.

The ROM is a great summer and fall jacket that I can fit a thin base layer under like the Variant Jacket and stay fairly comfortable.

The biggest plus for this jacket is the coverage it gives my body as well as the soft feel and packing ability when out backpacking.

Although this jacket serves its purpose I am unable to find a jacket for a little more extreme conditions that feels as good as the ROM.

I was climbing this summer and the ROM let in quite a bit of wind in the sides. It went from +20 degrees Celcius to about -10 degrees Celcius at the top of the mountain.

If a jacket could be created exactly like the ROM with full windstopper and pit zips with the full pocket mesh liner all the way through, that would be perfect. It would take a little of the cold weather bite out of the fabric for fall stationary days.

I know about the other version with the detachable hood but I prefer the one piece construction for maximum protection from the elements.

So far soooo good. Loving the fit, form and function of my ROM. It does exactly what it's designed to.

I absolutely love this jacket. I got it earlier this year heading into the fall and it has far surpassed my expectations. The Windstopper material and water-resistance is fantastic and lives up to its reputation. This jacket has turned me into a Marmot fan for life. Thanks Marmot!
