PreCip®

PreCip® is our “next step” technology that enables us to construct the lightest, most compressible, technical, waterproof and breathable rainwear in the world. Ventilated and breathable to keep you dry from the inside, PreCip® rainwear has plenty of pockets and custom fit features to keep you warm, dry and comfortable.

The new PreCip® coating is now more waterproof, more breathable and more comfortable to wear. We've added ceramic particles in the coating for added durability, waterproof reliability and Dry Touch comfort.

The key to PreCip® is its barrier technology: a microporous polyurethane that is impregnated with silicon dioxide particles. These particles create small, numerous, very consistent holes that allow the barrier to pass small water vapor molecules but not the bigger liquid ones. This keeps the rain out while letting your sweat vapor work its way outside, away from your body, to keep you dry from the inside as well as from the outside. PreCip® rainwear is compressible enough to stuff into a water bottle and comes in enough colors and styles to travel with you anywhere– to the mountains, the city or overseas.

Backpacker 9/05 Precip Pant

Field Notes From Our Testers

On an early-summer trip to Mt. Shasta, these bargain rain pants held up on glissades that ripped the seat out of more expensive models. Our test reports, “The pants didn’t leak a drop, even sliding in wet snow, and the PreCip fabric breathed well while I climbed with a base layer underneath.” Ankle zips make for easy on-off. The pull-ons have no fly, but for the price, we’re not complaining.

Trail 11/08 Full Zip Precip Pant

Light and Ideal

Coming from the same drawing board as the hugely popular Precip jacket, the matching Precip Pant is aimed at a similar user and is very good if you want lightweight, packable trousers. The weight is exceptionally low while the fabric offers excellent and proven performance. The trousers come in short, regular and long leg lengths so they should fit most people. This version also has a full-length sidezip so you can easily get it on and off while wearing boots of any type. There is a drawcord ankle cuff adjuster to control the fit a little too. A couple of zipped mesh pockets are provided while the waist gets elastication and drawcords. There is also a shortzip version at £50 if you want to save some cash (but this may not fit over big boots so easily, so try before you buy). Verdict: Very light, and ideal for anyone who wants lightweight overtrousers for year-round walking and backpacking. - by Graham Thompson

Reviews and comments

On the men's PreCip Full Zip Pant Medium and Large, what are the inseams for short, regular and tall.

These are the lengths:
Long - 34"; Reg - 32"; Short - 30"
Seems about right...

I wear these pants on early morning birding surveys of hay fields where heavy dew is present. The grass is about thigh-high and every morning my pants I'm wearing under the Precip pants get pretty wet right at the knee/lower thigh. Should I treat them with something? It is proving to be a little disappointing. thanks.

The pants have a higher chance of wetting out with the direct contact of the grass you are going through. It's important to remember you can wash these pants in the regular machine and throw them in the dryer. Even if you only dry them for about 20 minutes, it "refreshes" the DWR so the water rolls off again. If you have had them for a while, you could also add an after market waterproofing such as Grangers or Nikwax.

What do these pants weigh?

Scott, the PreCip Full Zip Pant weigh 12oz/340g

Bought these pants prior to a trip out by Mosquito Creek in the Canadian rockies. The pants have been through two very wet camping weekends and have performed very well. The full zip leg feature makes them incredibly easy to get into and out of. I've been caught in two rain storms during hikes and even a bit of snow in August and these pants held up great. Stayed warm and did not get soaked. Take care of them and they will take care of you.

The pants have served me great on hikes. Upon washing them at home for the first time, I accidentally used fabric softener. Is the water repellence gone, or can it be restored somehow?

After getting caught in a cold rain in Sedona two years ago, I bought a complete Precip outfit, including the full-zip pants. I find that the full zip helps me vent heat during long-distance endurance hikes.

Will you be getting any more in Gargoyle size Medium any time soon? Will you restock in colors other than black? I was hoping to pick up a pair soon but can't find them anywhere! (except in black)

Look for our PreCip Full Zip Pant in mid-February as part of Marmot's Spring 2011 line. They will be available in both Black and Gargoyle.

Whould these fit over a skiboot or a snowboardboot?
magnus

I noticed the side zipper is exposed and does not appear to be a water resistant zipper; is there a backing to it to prevent water from getting through?
I'm very much interested in these as they appear to be able to vent more easily.
