MemBrain® Strata™
Marmot’s own lightweight waterproof / breathable technology. A lamination technology that rates a whopping 20,000mm in waterproof performance and 20,000 gr in breathability.
Requiring neither lining nor 3-layer construction like many similar lamination processes, MemBrain® Strata™ products are by far the lightest, most breathable garments in their categories.
Marmot’s proprietary 2.5 layer MemBrain® Strata uses micro non-organic particles on the inside of the lamination to increase durability and provide a dry touch instead of that clammy feeling you get from some other products.
The back print pattern is carefully designed to achieve the maximum durability and breathability. Abrasion tests rate 4-5 times better than regular MemBrain® (which is why regular MemBrain, as well as all 2-layer laminates require a separate lining).
Compared to 2.5 layer coatings in the market, our 2.5 layer lamination is about 100% more breathable. In addition, laminated stretch fabrics stretch more and have a softer hand than 2.5 layer coated fabrics.

Marmot’s MemBrane Fights Price and Weight Inflation
All the talk at the show has been about prices inevitably heading up. But Marmot is introducing a new line of technical performance apparel that will cost less – far less – than similar gear.
The key is Marmot’s new 2.5-layer MemBrain Strata, a waterproof/breathable laminate membrane fabric. The half-layer membrane is printed on the inside of the jacket, making it lighter but retaining the advantages of lamination.
Used in Marmot’s men’s Mica and women’s Crystalline jackets, the fabric imparts all the performance of $200-plus jackets for just $130. The half-layer print makes the jacket less clammy than laminated jackets and much lighter (the Crystalline weighs in at a mere six ounces).
“Basically, we can offer the same jacket performance-wise that cost $260 just three years ago, at half the price,” said Brian La Plante, category merchandising manager for Marmot.
The Crystalline beat out 280 entries to win the Outdoor Industry Award at the Outdoor Show in Friedrichshafen, Germany. It’s also turning heads here at OR, displayed in front of the Marmot booth. Marmot has also put the Strata technology in its new Aegis jacket, which sports more features like front zip pockets, but is slightly heavier and retails for $140.
Out There Spring 2009 Mica
One of the Lightest
One of the lightest full-zip waterproof jackets I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. What makes it great is its light weight and its ability to breathe. Often I find waterproof jackets either too heavy for high output activities or poor in breathability, leaving you wet and clammy. This jacket was great for the high output activities – I felt warm enough, never too warm, and, most importantly, never felt damp. I wish I’d had a chance to test it in a strong downpour to see how well the Marmot Mica would keep me dry in really tough conditions. I would, however, highly recommend this jacket for any strenuous activities where you need protection from the elements in a medium-weight waterproof jacket or where you don’t have the room to carry a less packable, heavier rain jacket - Phillip Hiom

Get Layered – Look Cool, Stay Dry
You’ll barely know you’re wearing it (it weighs only 7 ounces) until you’re caught in a downpour. Made from a unique fabric that’s both waterproof and breathable, the Mica is soft yet ready for any weather. For the price, you can’t find a more versatile high-quality option.

Our Favorite Rainproofing Gear
Rain can ruin your day only if it catches you completely unprepared, which is why we suggest keeping a Mica in your pack. The jacket weighs just 6.8 ounces (in size medium) and crumples into a baseball-size bundle. Constructed with Marmot’s new 2.5-layer MemBrain Strata fabric, it repels heavy rain but still lets sweat evaporate. – Dan Nelson
Backpacker 5/09 Mica and Crystalline
Lightest Rainshell
For complete waterproofing for the least weight and bulk, nothing beats the Mica (women’s version is the Crystalline). It delivered on a three-day Adirondack soaking that ended with testers wringing out their socks. It’s made with Marmot’s MemBrain Strata, a ripstop nylon laminated to a polyurethane membrane with a silky inner coating that keeps it from feeling clammy. The translucent fabric looks delicate, but it held up well to normal wear and tear on several multiday trips. Downsides: Breathability is fine for moderate trail hiking, but not for steep, sweaty climbs; the DWR wet out (but the fabric didn’t leak) in prolonged rainstorms; and the low pockets aren’t hipbelt friendly. – Berne Broudy

Mica Jacket wins National Geographic "Best of Adventure Gear" Award
Marmot’s ultra-light Mica Jacket has been awarded the 2009 “Best of Adventure Gear” by the editors of National Geographic Adventure Magazine.
This highly functional and elegantly designed jacket is part of Marmot’s growing category of lightweight waterproof, breathable shells for men and women. It also is the cornerstone of the company’s new MemBrain® Strata™ -- a new 2.5 layer laminated technology.
Marmot’s 6.0 oz Crystalline Jacket – the women’s version of the Mica – recently won the OutDoor Industry Award at the international European OutDoor Show in Friedrichshafen, Germany.
Mica Jacket Review by Simon Fryer of the Colorado Mountain School
This spring I was in need of a new waterproof shell…bad! I’ve worn out my Precip after years of abuse in the mountains, at the crags, and in the bottom of my pack. When I jumped on Marmot’s website and saw the Mica Jacket it seemed to fit the bill. My criteria was simple: lightweight (7 ozs) and waterproof (MemBrain Strata). That’s all I was really looking for in terms of base features. Marmot has always been spot-on with fit made for the field. They pay close attention to details like hoods that actually work with a helmet and room in the arms and body that allow you to move when skiing and climbing.
When the jacket arrived I was impressed by it’s packability. It stuffs down into one of the two hand pockets (about the size of an orange). Perfect for clipping to the harness or shoving into my pack.
Then came the true test. Front Range wind and snow on an early morning ski tour in the Indian Peaks. It was one of those days in the Colorado high country, when winter returns with a vengeance. I’d dressed for spring, for a fast tempo skin and ski, not for these temps, not for nukin’ wind and recycled snow ripping through the air. The jacket lived up to my past experiences with Marmot’s gear. It worked - and worked well. It broke the wind and kept me dry. It allowed me to stay warm in the wind and not overheat on the skin. The cuffs stayed down over my gloves and the hood provided the needed room and protection.
I’m looking forward to the spring and summer season ahead in Rocky Mountain National Park. Having the Mica in my pack will be a relief when the wind howls and the rain decides to wash me off a climb. If you’re in need, check out Marmot’s Mica Jacket.
Cost: $130 – You can’t beat that for a fully waterproof shell!

I bought this jacket last summer when it was a new model and upon seeing it I was immediately impressed. It was put to the test and held up very well. I held out 100% of water for 2 and a half hours before starting to give way to little water. Once dried it was back to its previous potential. I recommend the Mica Jacket to anyone who has or wants to pursue a future in ultralight backpacking. It's the lightest jacket on the market for the quality and weight.
