M2
Marmot M-series fabrics are designed for moving light and fast. They combine stretchable, water repellent, abrasion resistant and highly breathable shell materials with insulating buffer materials on the inside.
M2 shells are the ideal balance between weather resistance, breathability and thermal protection. They are appropriate for a wide range of aerobic use in moderate to cold conditions.

WINDSTOPPER®
WINDSTOPPER® Soft Shells offer total windproofness and maximum breathability, combining the comfort of a soft mid-layer and the water resistance of a shell in one garment. WINDSTOPPER® Soft Shells keep you comfortable and provide the freedom of movement you need for enhanced performance in a wide range of activities and weather conditions.
Constructed of soft, quiet, stretchy fabrics, WINDSTOPPER® protects your body’s warmth from the chilling effects of wind and weather and prevents overheating and perspiration build-up by allowing moisture vapor to easily escape. The unique WINDSTOPPER® membrane totally stops wind from penetrating the fabric while allowing moisture to escape unhindered for 2X more breathability than comparable windproof products.
With this 3-layer construction, the WINDSTOPPER® membrane is bonded between a high performance fabric such as robust, high-quality stretch polyester on one side, and a quick-drying polyester fleece on the other. The durable water repellent finish offers additional weather protection.
Designed for an active fit, WINDSTOPPER® performs well in outdoor activities, such as hiking, backpacking, cycling, hunting, mountain sports, skiing, snowboarding and trekking in weather conditions, including: strong winds, light snow and rain.
ActiveGearReview.com reviews the Leadville Jacket
Courtesy of ActiveGearReview.com:
The Marmot Leadville Jacket is a great lightweight softshell that can be used for a number of different activities. The jacket has Windstopper softshell fabric with side panels that stretch as you move. We tested out the Leadville Jacket on cold rainy and windy hikes. The softshell material is water resistant and while caught in the rain for 30 minutes, we kept dry. We caution you that this is not waterproof though, so it will soak through in long downpours. We found the jacket to be pretty lightweight while stuffing it in a pack when it was warm and it also can get pretty compact for saving room in your backpack. The Marmot Leadville jacket has a drawcord near the bottom and adjustable cuffs to lock in the warm and keep the cold weather and snow out. If you cannot live without your music, the jacket even has a hole in the pocket for your headphones. We found the jacket to run a little big as we tested out a large and found there to be plenty of extra room around the mid section. Our tester was 6′0 tall and 175lbs. Activities we think this jacket is ideal for include; cold weather hiking, spring skiing, snowshoeing, cold weather running, and looking sporty while grocery shopping. Hi. Just wanted to know how effective is the windstopper for this jacket when you have the venting side panels? Does the wind penetrate easily thru this panel? I am guessing that the panel has no windstopper material. I am interested in using this jacket for hiking and as part of my layering system.

Even though the M2 side panels are not wind resistant, I haven't felt a noticeable amount of wind penetrate the fabric. Since your arms are mostly at your sides while walking/hiking I'm assuming this is why I haven't felt the wind yet, but otherwise, the Windstopper fabric does a remarkable job deflecting the wind around your body anyway. I too, have and continue to plan to use the jacket for layering while hiking and backpacking.

i have owned this jacket now for aprox. 10 months and i love it. the panels under the arms are fairly wind resistant but highly breathable, adding much more freedom of movement and comfort to the jacket. the only time i notice wind coming through the side panels is when i am reaching for a hold and there is a strong side wind, and even then it is minor. Most of the time, the side panels are not even exposed to the wind, so you don't lose much protection due to the side panels while increasing the breathability and mobility of this jacket tenfold.

I purchased the jacket and wore it right out of the store into a torrential downpour. The jacket kept me completely dry as water beaded right off of it. When I went inside I was surprised how warm it was. I quickly had to take it off b/c it was so warm. I have not worn it out in field conditions yet but look forward to testing its capabilities.

I bought this jacket the other day and have been wearing it since. So functional--really does stop the wind--and cool looking--have received compliments already. It has great pockets, internal waistline drawstings in pockets, it's lightweight but warm, velcro adjustable sleeve openings seal out wind, all around comfortabl--even at the neckline when fully zipped. Have used it in high wind and light rain already and it has performed excellently! This is my first Marmot piece and I'm sure it won't be the last.

I just bought this jacket today and couldn't be more pleased. It is the perfect jacket for San Francisco weather where it can be cold and drizzly when you leave in the morning and warm and breezy on your way home. This jacket is classy enough to wear to work and sporty enough to wear out on the weekends. I love it!

I've had this jacket since mid March and is has performed very well. My first outing w/ it was a weekend backpacking trip in Bear Valley early June. Evening temps were down to low 20's and when combined w/ a Patagonia Capilene 3 base layer and REI t-shirt I was a little cold just sitting around camp... It did deflect light snow very well though. I swapped the jacket during the night for my REI Taku jacket which w/ just the base layer and t-shirt kept me very cozy. The following weekend we did a 27 mile trek through the Los Padres NF and this jacket was great. Upon arrival we hiked in, at night, several miles along a ridge w/ temps around mid 50's and wind gusts roughly up to 45mph. I could feel the wind shoving me around but no chill got through at all. I didn't get to warm either even while wearing a base layer, t-shirt and hiking w/ a pack and I'm a bit of a hot-body... It vented very well.
So my experience w/ this jacket as an outer/mid-layer in low temps and sedentary activity was OK but maybe a fleece would be better. However, during high winds and activity in mid temps, this jacket ruled. I think layering it w/ a light weight breathable shell could be a good combination but there are lighter, warmer mid-layers out there. I guess it just depends on what your goal is.

I would say it is to warm for winter running. At some point you will get to warm and have to unzip, Then it will be flapping around and get in the way. I have the vest and it is still to warm with a capiline 2 under it. I feel for running anything that completely stops the wind is bad in the long run and will cause overheating. It would be better for skiing and such where your not exurting yourself as much.
However I love it for its water reppellancy and pocket configuration. I never like to leave home without it. I recently went on a tour of europe and found it very useful for all the changing climates. Never had to worry about pick pockets. It is very reflective as well.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has used this jacket for winter running.

Perfect shell for sub 40*F runs...
... 35-40*F dry-damp - combine with light/med long sleeve base layer
... 30-35*F dry-damp - combine with heavy long sleeve base layer
Ts or light fleece maybe added depending on individual needs.
shell is light considering the amount of weather protection your getting
good price fantastic value.

I really like the fabric of this jacket--it is more supple than most soft shells. And a good mix of Windstopper and more breathable fabric. I would, however, make the sleeves a bit shorter and the body a bit longer. Also, some more subtle "earthy" colors like a dark brown/chocolate would be nice.

I feel like I'm reviewing a different jacket compared to what other wearers on this site and others have. I find the sizing to be enormous, so much so that I wonder if my jacket is mismarked. I'll admit to being a scrawny runner with arms a little on the short side, but, at 5-9 and 140 wearing a Small, this jacket is very roomy throughout the body, falls well below my waist, and the arms are super roomy, reach beyond my fingertips, with cuff openings so large that when I cinch them closed there is barely enough velcro exposed to do the job. I wore it running once and it performed well--blocked whatever wind I encountered and allowed my body heat to dissipate. But the sizing makes it ridiculous to wear for running, which is supposed to be one of the activities it is designed for. In reality, it seems designed for people wearing lots of layers to take up the extra room in the construction. By way of comparison, I have a Tempo and I love the way it fits. To sum up the Leadville: good performance, awful fit.

Just a quick comment on fit. I love this jacket and before I went to order it online I had the opportunity to try it on at a shop. Definitely size down one if you want a good fit. I couldn't believe I fit into the medium at 120lb and 5'11 — always a large. Anyway, this jacket suits a fitted look — the large was too long and since the fabric doesn't seem to fall like say a cotton hoodie it seemed weird with the loose look.

I purchased this jacket as a windbreaking shell for cold weather commuting on my bike. The bright orange color screams, "Don't Hit Me With Your Car!" while the fit was as good as I could expect. I've already gotten several compliments on it and look forward to having it as a regular Go-To piece of gear. The only downside I've found to the jacket is that there is no windproof membrane backing to the zipper. High breezes can put a chill down the center of my chest - but I suppose better baselayering can minimize it... Thanks for a great jacket Marmot!

I purchased this jacket three months ago to use for cycling, and it has treated me well. With just a light sweater underneath I have been fairly comfortable walking in the teens. When worn by itself its great in the forties and a little chilly in the thirties. I have yet to feel overheated or sweaty thanks to the side panels. I really feel the "angel wing movement" when biking. I have yet to climb in the jacket but assume it will do well. This is the only soft shell I have ever found that fits my 6'4" 160lb frame. In a medium the sleeves are actually long enough for biking,. Tall guys, buy this jacket.
on 12/31/10.
I agree. Being 6' 5" and 200 pounds, it's hard to find clothing that fits properly. The size Large fits me great. The body hits just a little below the waist and the sleeves actually are long enough!

I bought this jacket to wear while commuting in the winter in Madison, WI since I needed a 2XL and couldn't find a decent jacket from the usual biking companies. This thing is amazing. Today the temp was 20F and windchill of 10F while biking home. I was not cold and the wind wasn't noticeable with only this jacket and a base layer on. I have worn it numerous times in similar weather so far this winter and even though I got this on sale at REI I would definitely pay full price for what it does. It can get a little warm when biking in the fall when it is 50F or so in the afternoon ride home but even then I didn't get cold from sweating while biking.
As far as sizing the sleeves are plenty long for biking, I roll them back when the weather is warmer and then all the way down when it gets colder so I can use the velcro to keep the cold out. The length is good for biking as well but not too long that it is noticeable. A 2XL is a little tight in the chest but the material stretches and I have worn a sweatshirt underneath of this with no problem.

I'm a fattish (6', 250lb.) fledgling cyclist and wanted something not so Team España for wearing around town when I'm not on the bike. Most of the cycling gear is cut for such skinny sissy-boys that they cut into my muscular armpits and stretch across my 12-pack abs. The XL fits me great. Just long enough in the arms that I don't have a gap between my gloves and sleeves on those cold morning rides. Also long enough in the back that I don't get any cold spots when I'm bent over peddling.
Blue color is a nice mix of bright and visible without being too obnoxious. Pocket zippers are nicely hidden when zipped. Only real complaint has been mentioned above: for a windstopper jacket, the zipper needs to have something to retain the windstopperness. Anything above a walking pace or any hint of breeze and you can really feel the cold air coming through the front zipper. Even with a vest as a base layer, I still get the breeze if the zippers line up.
Overall, very nice jacket. Very durable. Nice DWR finish when new. We'll see how the water resistance fares as it ages.
on 3/28/11.
I've had this jacket for about six months now, and have had it in the field for more hikes and climbs than I can count. It's warm when you need to be warm, and it breathes when you don't want to be too warm. I bought it for the specific purpose of hiking and climbing, and it's turned into my every day, every situation, go to jacket. No complaints here. Very happy.

This has been my "go-to" jacket for 2 years now and I am still in love with it! Great fit, wonderful protection from rain and wind, and great durability. I even went through a moped wreck with it, coming out without a scratch (and none on the jacket). I love this jacket and actually am planning on getting another one sometime soon.
