Down

From the beginning, down has been Marmot’s foremost insulator. No synthetic surpasses the lightweight, compactability and longevity of down.

Marmot Down DNA:
Down is in our DNA. Marmot was founded in 1974 as a manufacturer and seller of premium quality down jackets, vests and sleeping bags. To this day we only use the finest quality certified goose down for our down insulated outdoor products. Mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide rely on Marmot down gear for warmth, comfort, and sometimes survival.

Marmot Down Quality:
Down quality is determined by fill power and durability which is dependent upon the age/maturity of the bird and the processing of the down. The best down comes from larger, more mature birds and goose down is better than duck down (when age/maturity are equal). More mature goose down has larger filament clusters than less mature goose down. These clusters, when grouped, provide many more trapped air pockets and therefore provide better insulation. To maximize the effectiveness of the down clusters, the proper processing of the down (sorting, washing & drying) is required to open them up.

Higher fill power means higher loft, better insulation, lighter weight, and greater durability. We test all of our down for content, cleanliness, species, and fill power. We guarantee minimum fill power for all of our down clothing and sleeping bags. That means, for example, that our 800 fill sleeping bags are guaranteed to have at minimum 800 fill power. We don’t believe in + or – variation when it comes to comfort.

Down Origins:
Down is the light, fluffy undercoating at the base of the feathers of waterfowl. Down is a multi-dimensional structure that insulates by creating pockets of still air that retain body heat. Down is highly breathable and exceptionally comfortable. Pound for pound, high quality down is the most efficient natural insulator there is.

Geese are raised primarily for food and the down that is derived from them is a by-product of the food industry. Geese are raised on large and small farms and roam free outside on these farms. This is their natural environment. They are not raised indoors in controlled conditions. Geese are grain fed and also have access to local plant life.

Geese are generally harvested after 4-9 months for food. Some female geese are kept for breeding stock and are harvested between 1-2 years. These are the geese called the “mother birds” that provide the best, most mature down. After the geese have been harvested for food, the down and feathers are removed, washed, dried and then sorted by separating the down and small feathers from the larger, heavier feathers. These processing methods determine the final quality and fill power of the down. Marmot currently buys down primarily from Russia, Poland & China.

Marmot Guaranteed For Life:
Since 1974 we’ve guaranteed every product we’ve made for the life of the product. We believe the best thing for everyone and the environment is to make products that last.

I have had one for 2 years, the blue and grey one and its sooo good. Its incredibly liteweight and so fluffy warm. The internal stuff sack really works well and all the details are really covered in this unit. I wear it all winter in Detroit and when I travel up in mountains for climbing expeditions I throw a 3 layer goretex shell over the Greenland and I am not only toasty warm on summit, but I am bullet proof. My shell is also a Marmot, a 3 layer ice climber. All I want now is to pick up this new color scheme, the cintron and grey. The jacket is a bargain for the level of quality and action it delivers, and I am a thrifty action shopper! Enjoy, you ll be warm for sure.

Where are the jacket weights? When seriously comparing lightweight climbing jackets, this is obviously one of the primary considerations. Come on now.

You're absolutely right, the weight should be under "Specs". The size medium Greenland Baffled Jacket comes in about 1 lb 12 oz (794g).

Hi, i would like to know whats the size of the jacket compressed to carry in the backpack . Thanks

I got this jacket last season for a pit jacket and belay jacket for those nasty below zero days of BC skiing and ice climbing. I am amazed, its really not that heavy to take in the pack and will warm all the way to my toes. Last february i was out skiing in -22 weather and i was the only one who was warm while doing stability tests in an 8ft pit.

Hmm... Is it Waterproof or just water repellant?

The Greenland Baffled Jacket is water repellant.

Could anyone tell me what is the fill weight of the down in this jacket? How much down is in there?

Thank you for your question. The Greenland Baffled Jacket has 300g of 800 Fill Down.

What is the actual weight of the down (size medium)in the Greenland and in the 8000m parka?

The weight of the Greenland Baffled Jacket is 1lb 11oz and the 8000m Parka is 3lb 1oz.

trying to compare this to others out there: what is the "fill weight" of the medium?

The fill weight of the Greenland Baffled Jacket is 300g of 800 fill down.

I bought this jacket so I could / can ride my scooter to work thoughout the winter months too. as I tested it for the winter months I found out that not only does it work well but I need only wear a t shirt as a base layer to ride in under 20 degree weather an at 30mph theres a pretty significent wind chill too. I also have the expedition gloves and together it feels like summer. the only part exposed is my lips and some cheek but I put up wit that for the 30 min. commute. Buy one and enjoy winter.

Hello dave so the Greenland is windproof but is it waterproof also ?

The Greenland Baffled Jacket is not waterproof. It is water resistant.

I love the warmth of this jacket (especially after the summit where you need insulation).

It's very light and easy to compress. Perfect for heavy summits.

How adjustable is the hood. Does it have 2-3 adjustments on it so it will give a good fit for someone not wearing a helmet? As I noticed, that was the main continual complaint about the First Ascent down jacket, that because it apparently has no rear adjustment to tighten the hood up, it falls down into your face since it is made so large to fit helmets, which makes it unable to be used as a comfortable as a cross-over jacket when not used as a mountaineering expedition jacket. Thanks for your help, as I am searching for a warm jacket, but I am leaning toward your greenland jacket to purchase at this time.

Does this fit down jacket for the temperature of -35 degrees Celsius?

Is it possible to pack this jacket to its pocket?

Yes, it fits inside a zippered internal pocket.

Hi! I would like to use this jacket for belaying when ice climbing and when hiking mountains and winter camping. If it's cold and windy, I often like to put a down jacket on top of the mountain. Most of the time I still have my backpack with me when I do this. Is the fabric of the down jacket too brittle to handle hiking with your backpack for short distances (I usually take off my down jacket while starting to go down) ? Thanks

I bought this jacket to go on a cruise to the Arctic Circle and it did not disappoint.
It is extremely light, despite the bulk, which made carrying and wearing it during the 2-week trip completely hassle free.
With the hood up, I was toasty warm with only a t-shirt on underneath - even in blistering winds and temperatures well below freezing.
My only wish with this jacket is that it be six inches longer so that my backside would also be covered, and/or include a wind skirt, so that cold air would not sometimes creep in from the bottom (hence the 4-star rating instead of 5 stars).
My dad has an older Marmot jacket that is equally light and warm but a touch longer and with a wind skirt, and it is perfect even in the coldest, windiest days.

Looks like a good jacket, I'm just wondering how compatible is it with a climbing helmet on and the hood up?

Thanks

It works just fine and isn't overly snug at all. I have never worn a warmer jacket

Does it have an elastic drawcord either at the waist and/or at the hem?

No it does not.

I've had one of these for a solid 2 years. I love it. I use it mostly as a belay jacket on really cold days on ice or on backcountry trips. When I first got it, the water repellency wasn't very good. I used some nikwax down proof with a DWR spray. AWESOME! I've been out in sub zero weather with just a base layer on with this jacket over and have been toasty. Remember though that how cold one is, is fairly subjective. I love looking like the michelan man!!

excellent jacket. i had both the greenland and the ME himal jacket, both tested while winter camping in alpine region, i really like the himal, great jacket, but i prefer the greenland: lighter weight, better hood, i prefer the lining inside, greenland isolates better ("warmer"), especially in the arms b/c of boxwall vs stichthrough construction i think, handwarmers in pokets (ireally like em), and the isolation behind the zipper is way better. what i would want to have in the greenland2:

- more downfill in the lowest chamber at the back, therefor less downfill in the neck at the hood
-generally a bit MORE DOWNFILLING, especially in the back.
