Climbing December 2009 Baffin Jacket
Thermo Light
OK, the closest I’ve been to Baffin Island was a trans-Atlantic flyover, but that doesn’t mean I like being cold in the mountains here, in Colorado…or anywhere. Part of the company’s autumn line, the Marmot Baffin Jacket has become a trusted, smooth-moving winter companion. It’s light, thanks to 15-denier shell fabric; and is down-fill warm, courtesy of the water-resistant Primaloft® Sport insulation. Other niceties: zippered Napoleon hand pockets, reflective logos, elastic cuffs, and an interior draw-cord hem. A killer middle or outer layer, the Baffin rolls into a footlong-sub-sized bundle for easy packing. - MS

Best threads for a hard day on the hill
A winter version of Marmot’s ever popular wind jacket, the Baffin is stuffed with comfy, weather resistant Primaloft. It can serve double duty as a mid-layer on frigid days up on the mountain or as a stand-alone high-intensity shell – or just for sipping espresso and reading Kafka on a winter day. – Doug Schnitzspahn

This is great insulated jacket and you don't have to look like the michelin man. It is so light weight and it is very compactable. Also don't worry about the light material. I have had plenty of oppurtunities to snap or punture it and the jacket shows no signs of giving in.
My last use was in the High Uintas in August. I used this over a Capelene 1 when needed. While caught in some cold high wind storms around 11,000 feet, I could not feel the wind at all. I also used at night when sleeping and it kept me warm through the night. It also has enough loft to use as a pillow.
Love it!

I have last years model made with primaloft sport insulation, and let me tell you this jacket endured my 30day Yukon Canoeing and Backpacking trip with the National Outdoor Leadership School. Its highly compressible, quick drying, pretty breathable, and warm even down to the negatives (Farenheit). The build quality is awesome, the zippers are secure, the chest pocket is an awesome place to store maps and sunglasses, and it makes an incredible pillow in the backcountry. When weather can change on you in an instant, its nice knowing you have a jacket that can keep you warm through it all. I highly recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a lightweight, warm, and compressible jacket for any outdoor sport where cold weather comes into play. I plan to go mountaineering on Mount Rainier, and this will definitely be apart of my equipment list.

Love this jacket. Just the right weight and warmth for fall and spring and in winter with a shell. Durable and toasty in the backcountry, while stylin' in town. Sweet all-around, go-to jacket, for sure.

i bought this jacket on sale a couple years back after i lost my softshell, and it has become a staple. the only downside is it doesn't shed water, but it's warm, lightweight, and looks snazzy. i'm 5'10 and about 150, and the small fits perfectly (i like things slim-fitting). highly recommended!!

Sweet coat. I have the black one very classy. Being so light weight I didn't think it would warm by itself until I was out in the elements. To my surprise very wind proof too. I have be using it under my shell ski coat the two together it is like wearing my -40 sleeping bag.

Wore this almost exclusively while coaching hockey in the himalayas during the months of january and february. I was never cold and sometimes when we were out in places without heat it was perfect for sleeping in. Quite possibly the best thing I've ever owned. Still going strong.

Remarkable jacket! The exceptional light weight doesn't seem to fit the warmth. It feels like nothing when it's on, yet toasty - even in the wind. Perfect for those temps in the 30-40 degree range. When colder, it adds a perfect, light barrier underneath the next layer. Looks good in urban environments, too, not puffy or constricting. Great freedom of movement and nice long sleeves.

I've had this jacket for about 6 months and without question this is the most versatile jacket I've ever owned. In bad cold, I use it as an insulating layer under my shell. In less hostile conditions, I just wear it as an outer jacket. It's so warm, I was able to change my usual four-layer extreme cold system to a three-layer system without any loss of comfort. But what I love most is that it is so breathable, I find myself just leaving it on because it doesn't overheat. I got back from a -28 snowboarding trip a few hours ago and I'm still wearing it. No reason. I just haven't got around to taking it off yet. It's that comfortable.

What is the weight of the insulation?

Really happy with this jacket. Ive been wearing fleece since the early 90s, swear by it, and was looking for a replacement to my current fleece, when I ran across the Baffin. Its lighter and way less bulkier than fleece (packs down small). It also has some resistance to light winds (not much, but far better than fleece which wind passes right through). It’s a pretty warm jacket for fall and spring. Marmot suggests that its comparable to 200 weight fleece, however in comparing to my Marmot 200 polartec, its much warmer, and blocks light winds. It also keeps you warm when wet, which is a huge factor for me as a camper in the South East. True story- During a rainstorm one night it got completely soaked, and stayed wet all night. The next morning I gave it a good shake, put it on and made a small fire. I stayed completely warm and the jacket was dry before the fire had begun to catch. At first I was skeptical as it because it wasn’t a traditional fleece, but after trying it in mid-forties, wet conditions and mild winds, Im totally sold, definitely a keeper.
