It would be NICE if the jacket weights would be listed on all items. Anyone with half a brain knows you really need to know the weight of garments especially when it comes to "ultralight" items.

After checking out several down jackets, I found a sale from HTO in Washington D.C. The jacket is light as a feather (well of course, it's down) long enough to keep the lower back & upper butt warm, and the hood is really handy in our cold Sun Valley winters. NOt a ski jacket due to lack of all those usual ski jacket pockets.....but it is not marketed as a ski jacket. If something happened to this one, I'd buy another.

I've owned this jacket since December. The weight- or lack of - is awesome. It is one of the warmest jackets I've had. My complaint- the shell is not very durable. I had this under my ski jacket, fell, and the minitool that was in my outer jacket packet STILL ripped through the shell. It's definitely durable enough for the city and light hikes. Apparently low branches have caught and ripped this fabric before, so protect it with an outer layer.

I own the previous version of this down jacket (650 fill) and I haven't had any issues with the shell. I take it backcountry skiing in the trees 25+ days a year and I wear in town on the colder days and I have yet to see a tear.

There are several different specifications to be looked at when looking for a down coat. 2 of the main ones that are often confused are fill POWER and fill WEIGHT.
Fill power refers to the down's ability to loft after compressed or 'resist compression'. 800 fill down refers to a 30 g sample of down being able to occupy 800 cubic inches of space after being compressed under a standardized force and fully lofting up again. 800 fill is a very high quality fill.
Fill weight refers to the amount of down in a jacket. The fill weight for the Ama Dablam jacket is 125g. For comparison, the Patagonia Down Sweater has 85g and the Feathered Friends Helios Jacket has 226g.
There are several other factors that play a role when picking an insulated mid layer: Baffled vs. sown through (the Ama Dablam is sown through => reduces weight but increases cold spots), mix content (feather vs. stalk ratio, the Ama Dablam has about a 90% down ratio) and the type of down (Goose vs. Duck, goose down for the Ama Dablam).
There are other things to consider as well, not pertaining to the fill of the jacket. The lining, shell fabric and extra 'features' like stuffing into it's own pocket.

yeah its pretty "silky". It feels like ur average ripstop nylon type material. similar to an average sleeping bag. But i must tell u it is probably the best jacket ive ever owned. unreal in all sorts of conditions. just use a real lightweight shell in real wet stuff. must have!!

AWSOME JACKET! a must have in the lightweight arsenal. Unreal weight to warmth ratio. Very useful pocket stuff sack. Great adjustment points such as the hood and cuffs. i would recomend to anyone...and i do on a daily basis because i work at a sporting goods store with a lot of other brands and styles. Better than the rest thats for sure.

Hi Tom. The Ama Dablam is not waterproof. It is water resistant and will stay dry for a short time in a heavy fog or light mist.

This is my first Marmot purchase. I am IMPRESSED. Above and beyond Northface quality.
This jacket is GREAT! Super warm, soft and light. By itself its warm enough to for the 20s and maybe the 10s. For the really cold and windy days just put a shell over it and you're ready for the 1s.
Hood is a great feature, large, adjustable and warm.

Honestly, I think it still works wonders when it's in the negatives w/out a shell. I'm in Alaska and right now it's -15...all I had on was a long sleeve cotton shirt under this jacket. It is awesome, that's for sure!!

This jacket is awesome! Definitely my favorite cold weather jacket purchase yet. It is extremely light weight and warm. I purchased the Ama Dablam and another down jacket of a different brand, and hands down this one ranks better in almost every category I was concerned with (fit, warmth, weight, style, hood).
I would definitely recommend this jacket!

I bought one of these about a week ago. I leave up in AK and it offers great warmth, lightweight, and good looks. Trouble is that it already has a tear in the back! The fabric is really, really fragile. Like paper-thin fragile. Unless you plan to always cover this jacket with another layer or are extremely careful, it is just not durable enough for regular use.

Thanks to Moloch for providing some much needed information regarding the construction of this jacket.
Marmot- it would definitely help to know if a down garment is sewn through or box baffle constructed, as this is a distinguishing characteristic that we use to discern if a jacket is "parka worthy" for certain expedition applications.
Fill weight would also help when comparing garments online.

Purchased this jacket last winter. It is insanely warm. Never had a jacket that was so warm it couldn't be worn inside until now. Also is feather light. Will probably buy my wife one this winter. Another excellent Marmot product.

I just received my ama dablam jacket in the mail. I am 5'8 140. I have a runner- type body and i ordered the small. It is long enough to fit my arms and goes comfortably down a little past my waist. Perfect! everything else i bought from marmot is a medium. which also fits. If you are between sizes like me dont be afraid to call marmot and ask some advice. They are really helpful.

This jacket is awesome! Really light and warm. It packs very small and it fits under and over my Minimalist shell jacket. Only thing you Marmot folks could maybe add to Ama Dablam is a mesh pocket for water bottle.
But yeah, very pleased with this one I am!

I just got this jacket.
I am very impressed with the size, and the features. They thought of everything with this. Stuffs into pocket, hood, waist and cuffs can be cinched down. I will be using it this winter to ski, and next summer in the backcountry working as a ranger. I will try to remember to give a followup review.

My wife just bought me this jacket for Christmas and I really enjoy it! So light... perfect for the chilly city weather here in Vancouver right now. All I wear is a Tshirt underneath and I'm good to go. The shimmeriness of the finish is very cool. Got style!
