Outside Buyer’s Guide 2009 Abode 2P

High Marks

Thanks to its mostly mesh canopy, the double-door Adobe received high marks for warm-weather stargazing and ventilation. But what really impressed us was its performance in an early-season Wasatch snowstorm. The full-coverage fly kept pelting snow from drifting through the mesh, while the tent’s unique pole structure – a pair of sturdy antennae springing from each of its two end hubs – kept it as unflappable as Trumps hairdo. It’s not quite as roomy as the Big Agnes, but it’s simpler to set up and much more stable. Two minor complaints: Snow and rain fell into the tent body when we exited the vestibules, and you’re out of luck if you break the proprietary pole-anchoring system.

Road Runner February 2010 Abode 2P

Incredibly Stable

Abode’s Stay Put Pole System is a unique arrangement of poles that cross over midway through the ellipse, making the tent incredibly stable. A fly vent helps keep the interior cool, and no-drip doors are indispensable when the weather turns damp. It’s simple to set up, yet versatile enough for use in a variety of campsites.

Reviews and comments

So I recently used this tent out in Northern N. Jersey. Before this I never even attempted to put it together so it was my first time even putting it up. I threw all the info/instructions away a while ago cause thats just the way i tend to do things. Well at my surprise, this tent was super easy to put together. The rain tarp was also easy to install and come to find out worked extremely well. It started raining during the night and didn't stop. We had to pack down in the rain but it was quite easy. This tent is super roomy. Plenty of room for a couple and enough room for just sharing space.. Couldn't be happier for a 2 person tent.

I've used this tent in everything from Texas summers to Arkansas winters. I took it on a week-long backpacking trip in Arkansas where it rained daily and even hailed on us. This tent withstood all the conditions marvelously. A few things kept it back from receiving 5 stars. First, try as I might I cannot get the fly perfectly tight across the top. Due to the pole design (which provides excellent headroom inside), the top of the fly is always susceptible to bending inwards with a little force applied to it. Even though I have not tested the tent in snow, I would imagine snow weight on the top would present a problem. Second, the vents on the ends of the fly do not have any way of sealing shut. In colder conditions I would prefer the vents to seal (even with a bit of velcro) to protect what precious heat is available inside the shelter. Lastly, the no-drip doors aren't as no-drip as I would like them. They always dripped a little on our gear even if we were super careful entering and exiting the tent.

On to the the existing 4 stars... I love all the internal head room. I bunked with a 6'6" tall guy for a week and didn't have any issues with internal space, and he didn't have any issues fitting inside the tent. During an especially windy night, the tent held up wonderfully to every gust, never dipping down or collapsing on us. As I mentioned above, I was extremely impressed with the construction after golf-ball sized hail came down on us. The only damage was from a few ice chunks that bounced up inside the fly and made everything a bit damp. Overall, great tent and I would definitely recommend for the 3 season backpacker.

Christmas gift last year and first used in March '10 on Boy Scout camp out. Since then have used 7 times in mostly good weather.

I am 6'8" and have plenty of length in the tent when laying parallel to the sides. With my height, I spent hours looking for a tent with the length and headroom. Can sit up without issue. Would be a problem if I had and used the suspended storage.

The no-drip do is not exactly accurate. Plenty of drips inside from condensation/dew. Never entered or exited in active rain.

I still cannot get the long side of the tent taught enough to get the cantilevered floor off the ground as well as the short sides. Any tips?

Overall, I am very happy with the tent, love the color and internal space. Again, at 6'8" and 230lbs I had plenty of room when alone and comfortable still when sharing.

Would absolutely by Marmot tent products again.
