Two Global Warming Experts Bicycling Across U.S. To Inspire Action.

More information, including full bios and photos, is available here.

Ride for Climate USA is a 5,000 mile bicycle-based speaking tour to raise awareness of global warming, inspire action and promote solutions. It is a grassroots project developed, organized and run by volunteers who believe that the US needs to do more to address this issue. Global Warming experts David Kroodsma and Bill Bradlee will be speaking at various locations along the route and participating in group rides - details are available on the website. Their bicycle tour officially began on April 21st in Boston and they will be riding through many major US cities to raise awareness of the need for the US to take action on global warming.

UPDATE – SEPTEMBER 5, 2007

Riding through Oregon, the team encountered many different environments and a range of environmental initiatives. From the urban center of Portland, though the Cascades into the high desert region of Bend, down to the Willamette Valley into Eugene, and over to the Coast the cyclists met many people involved with the environment. Along with newer team member Nicky, the group learned about a lot of different initiatives seeming to make a positive impact on Oregon and the environment. For instance, Portland’s per capita emissions have decreased by 12.5% since 1993 when the city enacted a plan to reduce CO2 emissions. The mayor of Eugene has plans to build energy efficient buildings. And in the coastal town of Reedsport they discovered a project attempting to generate electricity from wave power offshore.

The team headed down the coast to California, where they will make an appearance at Marmot’s headquarters on September 12. Read about their trip through Oregon on their blog here.

UPDATE – AUGUST 23, 2007

David and Bill reach the West Coast, Washington State, after nearly 4,000 miles of riding across the country educating communities about Global Warming. While in Washington the team decided to take a break from presentations, riding across a rural (and mountainous) route and taking in the scenery for a week without a scheduled appearance or presentation.

During this time they explored energy efficiency in homes while visiting a workshop constructing straw bale insulation. To read more about this, and their ride through Washington, visit their blog here: http://www.rideforclimate.com/usa/blog/#post-44.

UPDATE – AUGUST 2, 2007
The team reaches the Pacific Northwest, beginning the final stretch of the first leg of their trip. Having gone nearly 3,500 miles so far, David & Bill finish their stint through Montana and the Idaho panhandle heading towards Seattle, where they will then ride down the coast to San Francisco.

Through Montana the riders found unusually warm weather, which prompted discussion with locals along the way about Global Warming. UPDATE – JUNE 13, 2007
The team spent some time in Wisconsin, riding with the Mayor of Madison and generally finding it a great place to ride. They learned that Global Warming is potentially likely to affect Wisconsin in major ways and spent some time talking to newspapers and TV stations through the state.

For the first time, David Kroodsma and Bill Bradlee have created video clips for their blog and used them to cover their ride through Wisconsin.

UPDATE JUNE 6, 2007
The Ride for Climate team reaches Chicago after 1,200 miles of cycling through the country promoting Global Warming awareness. While there, they found the city to be fairly “green”, even though it is a major metropolitan center, and discovered the city is taking strides to improve the environment even further by improving buildings throughout the city and planting thousands of trees, among other things.

UPDATE – MAY 12, 2007
David Kroodsma and Bill Bradlee complete their six-day tour of Pennsylvania. Reaching Pittsburgh on May 12, the two spent nearly a week riding across the state from Bradlee’s home town of Chester Springs, touring mostly the countryside and mountains. Speaking about global warming and discovering there was a definite interest in energy efficiency and how that affects climate change, they opened a dialogue with many people along the way. They ended their ride through Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh, where they will spend a few days giving talks and meeting more people.

UPDATE – MAY 4, 2007
David Kroodsma and Bill Bradlee reach New York City in Day 14 of their cross-country bicycle tour.. While there they explored how global warming is affecting New York and learned about ways the city is planning to deal with it in the future, including a long-term plan the Mayor just announced. They continue on their first leg of the tour which will take them from Boston to San Francisco, after which they will begin the second part of their ride which will take them back East to Miami. They are currently riding through Pennsylvania with several stops planned throughout the state.
